From NewJeans to IVE. 4th generation girl group, 'Onslaught' continues in the 2nd year
Competition for the "second year of debut" between the fourth-generation new girl groups, which dominated the music industry in 2022. Since the beginning of the year, NewJeans, who has grabbed the domestic music charts and set off firecrackers from the first activity of the second year, as well as debut colleagues such as Le Sserafim, IVE, and Kep1er have been showing off their robustness by delivering good news one after another in Japan across the sea.
NewJeans single album 'OMG' released earlier this year and its tracks are unrivaled. NewJeans' "OMG" topped the global K-pop category in February 2023 of the Circle Chart (formerly Gaon Chart) released on the 9th, and ranked second and third places also dominated the top ranks for two consecutive months with "Ditto" and "Hype boy," respectively.
It also topped the Japanese Oricon weekly chart. The single album "OMG" topped the Oricon weekly combined singles rankings released on the 10th (March 13th, February 27th to March 5th during the aggregation period) with 35,766 points. The album went straight to the top of the chart as soon as it entered the chart on January 16 and remained at the top for about two months, steadily gaining popularity, and once again topped the latest chart.
NewJeans and other girl groups have been delivering good news one after another in Japan while preparing for their spring comeback. In particular, Le Sserafim, which is showing an unusual rise in popularity in Japan, has earned "Double Platinum" certification with its debut single "FEARLESS" exceeding 500,000 copies as of February this year.
Le Sserafim is the first K-pop group to be ranked in the "Double Platinum" ranks as a local debut single based on the certification of the Japan Record Association. This is the first achievement of K-pop in 20 years since the association's certification standards were changed in July 2003.
In particular, Le Seraphim is the only overseas women's group that has recorded more than 500,000 shipments with their debut single in Japan, which has set a "first" and "unique" milestone.
The album broke the record of No. 1 Japanese debut album (record sales in a week based on the release date) set by the K-pop girl group, and as of January, accumulated more than 250,000 copies and obtained "Platinum" certification from the Japan Record Association. More than 250,000 additional records were shipped in about a month, proving local popularity.
Meanwhile, IVE and Kep1er proved their popularity by winning two gold medals side by side at the 37th Japan Gold Disc Awards announced by the Japan Record Association on the 10th. Ive won two gold medals, winning the "NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR" and the "Best 3 New Artists Asia".
Abe, who made his official debut in Japan through "ELEVEN" in October last year, proved his local popularity by being named on the "Gold Disc (given to albums with more than 100,000 shipments) selected by the Japan Record Association this month, and topped the "2022 Best-Seller K-pop Single Top Ten (January to November 13, 22)."
"LOVE DIVE" was also loved by the archipelago. "Love Dive" ranked fifth in the "2022 Best Seller K-pop Single Top 10" selected by Tower Records in Japan, and ninth in the "2022 Best of K-pop" by Amazon Music in Japan.
In addition, the third single title song, "After Like," was also successful, topping Japan's Amazon Music "2022 Best of K-pop," and also ranked sixth in the "2022 Best-selling K-pop Single Top Ten" selected by Tower Records, along with "Eleven" and "Love Dive."
Kep1er's achievements are also encouraging. Kepler was named in the "Best 3 New Artists - Asia" category with Ive and won the "Song of the Year by Streaming - Asia" category for his debut song "WA DA DA (wada)."
In October last year, 10 months after his debut, Kepler surpassed 1 million cumulative album sales with his debut album "FIRST IMPACT," his second mini-album "DOUBLAST" and his third mini-album "TROBLESHOOTER."
In addition, in Japan, it is making a sensation by ranking first in the rookie ranking in the "Artist-by-Artist Sales" category among the "55th Oricon Annual Ranking 2022" and winning the "Special Award" as the only K-pop artist at the "64th Japan Record Awards."
The comeback in Korea was also expected. Kepler confirmed their new album comeback on April 10, and Ive also made it official in April. Le Sserafim is also scheduled to make a comeback between April and May. Prior to this, they and their debut motivation, "JYP Rookie" NMIXX, will also make a comeback with a new album on March 20 to prove their skills and charm. Amid the long-term dominance of NewJeans on the domestic chart, expectations are high for their pride among the 4th generation girl groups making a relay comeback.
