[Exclusive] NewJeans "Unprecedented girl group competition? I'm having fun and happy." [★Full Interview]
Girl group NewJeans (Minji Hanni Danielle Haerin Hyein) has become one of the winners of the 4th generation girl group competition, which was called the best, by sweeping the grand prize AAA performance of the year and AAA Rookie of the Year at the 2022 Asia Artist Awards. - You've been working hard for 2022 without a break. I wonder if you did well at the year-end awards ceremony and rested well.
▶Haerin = I spent time with my family and rested comfortably, and I think I spent time looking back on my past activities and thinking about how I want to develop further in the future.
▶ Hyein = I think it's a relief that we finished our first award ceremony stage safely in 2022, and I think I had a happy time because I met my family comfortably and rested well.
▶ Hanni = I couldn't meet my family in person because they were abroad, but I had a good rest while contacting them often.
- Wasn't it physically challenging this year?
▶ Hanni = I think I rather enjoyed it. We've been very busy, but it's fun to do various schedules.
▶ Haerin = I think 2022 will be an unforgettable year. For me, I've experienced a lot of things for the first time, so I think 2022 will be unforgettable.
▶ Danielle = 2022 was the year that we started as a team called NewJeans.
- I wonder when you realized that NewJeans was the most popular in 2022 and that it was so popular.
▶ Minji = When I met my family this time, my grandfather knew all the members' names and ages. Of course, it's because I'm in the team, but I realized that you're really interested that much.
▶ Danielle = To be honest, I still can't believe it. Ha ha.
- If you come out of the dorm and walk on the street, wouldn't you recognize it's NewJeans?
▶ Minji = Um... Won't they not recognize me? Haha. I don't think they'll recognize me if I wear a mask.
▶ Hanni = Once, I was surprised when someone was talking about "Ditto" somewhere on my day off. But that person just passed by.
- What was the message that CEO Min Hee-jin gave when NewJeans won the grand prize and swept the Rookie Award at the year-end awards ceremony?
▶ Haerin = (CEO) said congratulations and support. She said, "Let's do fun and fun things together in the future."
▶Hyein = I'm proud of you and you sent me a message saying you worked hard. I've always said this after winning the award, but I'm very grateful.

-The competition for the 4th generation girl group is unprecedented. Wasn't it mentally difficult as a rookie who just debuted?
▶ Hanni = I can't help but feel pressured in this situation, but I'm having fun, so I think I'm happy to be able to enjoy music no matter what I experience.
▶ Danielle = As I received so much love and support, I think I want to work harder and repay you.
Q: What is the thing that draws the most attention from the members of NewJeans these days?
▶ Hyein = I like music. I'm interested in finding new songs. Since we like music, let's share our music playlist.
▶ Danielle = I think I'm interested in new experiences and learning as I get closer to Bernice during this comeback. And personally, I'm very interested in drawing.
▶ Minji = I think I'm also very interested in various things, but I'm also interested in music like Hyein, and I think I'm interested in fashion while doing activities. And these days, I'm into reading books again. I didn't have time, so I couldn't read it for a while, but I'm looking I like mystery novels a lot.
▶ Haerin = I'm also interested in music and fashion. I think I'm thinking a lot about how to express our songs on stage.
▶Hani = As I live with the members, my interests have become very similar. I'm very interested in expressing it through art. I used to like music, fashion, movies, acting, etc., but I think I'm more interested in it.
- Each of you gathered as NewJeans with a dream of becoming a singer. What do you want to draw as New Jin's (or as an individual)?
▶ Hanni = I think it's been more than two years since we gathered as a whole group. We always want to do well with the same heart, so we monitor and talk a lot together. I hope we can show you songs and performances that we can all enjoy and become artists that we always look forward to. We talk to each other a lot. We don't have a leader, but we take good care of each other, so we get together and talk a lot.
▶ Haerin = I usually stay at the dorm and practice even on my days off. I hope my skills get better and improve, so I feel proud when I practice and make up for it.
▶ Minji = I always want to grow up, but I think I always think about how to solve it. I think I grow up by solving those problems. I think it's a topic that we always talk about. It's about growth as a team and as an individual.
- Of course, it's most important to enjoy your activities, but I don't think we can ignore your team's performance.
▶ Minji = I want to do concerts in various places and I think that if I enjoy and work hard, I will naturally achieve results, and I want to do my best every time.
▶ Danielle = I want to create a stage that I am 100% satisfied with myself. There were 99 percent performances, but I don't think there was 100%.
- I think each of us will have a different memorable moment while we were working as NewJeans in 2022.
▶ Hyein = When I heard Bernese's cheers, I think it was the most memorable on stage.
▶ Hanni = I have a lot of them, too, but the most surprising moment was when everyone there sang along at the college festival, and I was surprised because it was louder than the in-ear sound of in-ear.
▶ Haerin = There are so many impressive moments that it's hard for me to choose, but I think it's the moment I came down from the stage. I felt that time was the most vivid, so I felt a lot of emotions, and I felt that we finished the performance.
Q: What was the most memorable reaction from your fans during the promotion?
▶ Danielle = Whenever I hear the cheers of the fans, I feel like I get energy and I can't express that feeling in words.
▶Minji = When I went to the university festival, I was aware that the atmosphere would be very good even before the festival, but I actually wanted to give you energy, but I came because I received energy. I think the reactions at that time were still incredible.
- I'm curious about your plans for 2023.
▶ Hyein = There are a lot of things we haven't shown yet, so we're going to try to show you a lot of different sides/
▶ Minji = I'm working hard on the stage this year to make more opportunities to meet Bernese than last year.
- Will it take a long time before we listen to the next song?
▶ Members = Not yet...Haha. I'm preparing a good song to meet your expectations.
- What do you want to hear from all the fans who love NewJeans the most?
▶ Danielle = "Thanks to New Jin's, I was very happy today." I think I would be very happy to hear that.
▶ Minji = I heard a comment saying, "I feel so happy when I see the performance of NewJeans," and I was very proud. I wanted to do music that we can enjoy together, and I was proud that we achieved that.
